Nibley House - Nursery

Nibley House Nursery is a family-run business, which opened in September 2003. Situated within a large Georgian manor house in the quiet and picturesque village of North Nibley, it has ample private parking. It is a ten- minute drive from Dursley, Cam, Wotton under Edge or Charfield, with easy access.

Children who love animals will love the nursery, for it is based on a 200-acre farm with sheep, cattle, horses, rabbits and hens. The children often take part in planned visits to the farm to see and bottle-feed newborn lambs, see the sheep being shorn in the Spring, see newborn calves and where milk comes from, take a look at foals and chicks, go blackberry and apple picking in Autumn - the list goes on. We also grow our own vegetables and flowers and make our own compost by recycling our snack and lunch time waste.

Safe, Secure, Happy, Healthy and Stimulating Surroundings
All our children are encouraged to develop their creativity, individuality and self-confidence in a secure environment; led by our staff who have a real rapport not only with the children in their care but with their parents or carers as well.

The nursery has well-equipped rooms that are homely and inviting. Our warm and welcoming atmosphere, where both children and their carers feel at home, is frequently commented on. That is what we aim for: the nursery to be a home from home.

Here are some of our carer's comments:

"My daughter loves her time at Nursery and I think this is a true reflection of all the staff. I think the Nursery gives the children the best start of all, and there was no other choice for me. The Nursery staff are all very approachable and helpful."

"Such a happy, caring Nursery - my son loves coming! Many thanks."

"Very pleased with the Nursery. My son thoroughly enjoys attending. Couldn't do any better."

"I think you do an excellent job and I have full confidence in the Nursery. I know my child will be treated as an individual and you will do your utmost to make sure he is happy and reaches his potential."

"We are very happy with our son's progress and think he is getting excellent provision."

"I am very happy with the Nursery. Thanks for all your hard work."

"A welcoming atmosphere. The staff know my child very well in a short period of time. Very astute and quick to speak to me about my son. Excellent communication."

"Nibley House Nursery is excellent; both our children have received outstanding care there and without a doubt, their social, emotional and academic development has been very positively improved upon by the Nursery."

"Nibley House Nursery is a wonderful Nursery - you do a great job."

Our Nursery Day
We enjoy a wide variety of creative and educational activities using a vast array of materials. Cookery, painting, gluing, sand, water, crayons, chalk, clay - whatever the topic (which changes weekly), the emphasis is on fun.

We offer a variety of nutritious snacks and drinks, some of which the children are encouraged in helping to prepare, such as fruit smoothies or soup. Fresh drinking water is always available. Children bring in their own packed lunch and we encourage parents to provide a healthy well-balanced meal. They take in lots of fresh air and exercise, and rest as necessary - all helping their physical, emotional and educational development.

Every child is recognised and treated as an individual, and we work closely with parents and carers to provide the care that meets the high standards you would expect for your child.

Experienced Staff you can Trust
We pride ourselves on the quality of our staff: They have worked together as a team for many years, and are all well qualified. They are encouraged to extend, improve and update their training and qualifications, with the nursery's full support. We are dedicated, friendly and approachable and appreciate the importance of our partnership with our parents or carers. The staff are the backbone of the nursery and are one of the many reasons that parents choose us.

Staff/child ratios are in line with regulatory guidelines i.e. 1:4 for age 2-3 years and 1:8 for 3-5 years.

Partnership with Parents and School Liaison
We actively encourage parents to share any skills they may have with the children or to come in and read a favourite story to the children. We also provide ample opportunities for parents to discuss their child's progress - either before or after each session; or by way of coffee mornings, parents evening or one of the other social events (including an Easter Party, summer trip, nativity play and Christmas Party). Each child is allocated a Key Worker and it is that person (or the Manager) who should be approached to discuss your child's progress with you and answer any questions you may have. We have a notice board with useful information and a half-termly newsletter to keep you up to date.

At the end of term, we hold a summer garden party with entertainment for the children. Some of those children will be leaving for school which, of course, is a huge step for them. We do our utmost to prepare the children for it, ensuring that the are looking forward to the next stage in their lives with confidence. We have close contact with all the local primary schools and arrange for the reception teachers to visit the children in the Nursery. For those children who will be moving on to our village school (North Nibley C of E School), we closely liaise with the school and have several preschool visits where the children spend time in their future classroom, to have an insight into what goes on and familiarise themselves with the reception teacher.
This has proved invaluable to many children and their parents.

The Curriculum
for the under threes:
Birth to Three Matters is a framework which helps develop babies and toddlers. It recognises that al 0-3 year olds have a need to develop and learn through interaction with people and exploration of the world around them. Birth to Three is divided into four "Aspects" which highlight the interrelationship between growth, learning, development and the environment in which they are nurtured and educated. The four "Aspects" are split into components as follows:

ASPECTS

For the 3-5 year olds:
The Foundation Stage sets out six learning areas which are:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Mathematical development
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development

Each of these areas has a set of stepping-stones that progress towards early-learning goals, for which the staff coordinate planned activities to help meet the diverse needs of each child. Learning is encouraged through play and includes activities to involve each of the above areas. Some of the ways that we do this are through:

  • Construction
  • Role play
  • Physical games
  • Stories and mark making
  • Literacy and numeracy games
  • Water, sand and other malleable materials
  • Cookery
  • Creative painting and modelling skills
